[GIFT INSIDE] Our natural desire to help

When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go”.  Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matthew 8:18,23-27)

Last week during Easter I was reminded of the story above. It was around ten years ago, and we all discussed this story in our bible study class.

At the time our teacher asked, “Why did Jesus wake up and calm the storm?”

All the students in the class answered differently,
“Because he is the Son of God”.
“Because he wanted to show them his power”.
“Because Jesus is able to do extraordinary miracles”.
Most of the answers were alike.

And then it was my turn.
And I answered, “Jesus calmed the storm because Jesus just wanted to help.”

The teacher smiled and never did I think that my answer which sounded so simple was precisely the answer that was considered most appropriate – Jesus just wanted to help.

I hope this story can be a reminder that we help not because we are great, we have higher positions, or need to be recognized. We help because helping is the most natural thing that we can do. And at the end, there’s no one who help, there’s no form of help, and there’s no one to help – because essentially we all are connected and we are one.
