Febi (20 y.o.) is a second semester psychology student at a private university in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. She is struggling to find ways to reach her dreams!
Q: Hello, Amelia Devina. I am just an ordinary person, born in a remote village and I come from a very humble family. I have a dream. After I graduate from my bachelor degree, I want to get a Master\\\’s scholarship from Erasmus Mundus. But I don\\\’t know where to start and what I should do to get accepted. That\\\’s my first question.
I also want to be someone useful for the society, especially in the social and education sector. But, at the same time, I am scared that I won\\\’t be able to sustain my family. I\\\’d like to support my parents and my younger sibling. I wonder how I can help others while even my own family need help. That\\\’s why I want to work hard, get the scholarship, get the money to guarantee my parents\\\’ and my sibling\\\’s lives and be able to help others. Please help me, Ma\\\’am. What should I do?
I am so touched when I read this letter. Behind all the worries, I see such a great love. Before I answer Febi\\\’s question, I\\\’d like to say a few things.
Febi, you are awesome!! You have the heart of an angel and you act so mature for your age. First, you\\\’re only in your second semester, but you have planned for your Master degree. Second, you\\\’re so young, but you already understand that life is not permanent. That\\\’s why we have to do good deeds to others as soon as we can. Third, your kindness is your greatest asset! You put others above you and you want to be useful for the world. Fourth, you are lucky to have found your life purpose at such a young age. Fifth, you must be grateful to have such a loving family.
A: Now, follow these tips. Here are 5 simple steps to help you reach your dreams.
1. Do your research
Eagerness and faith are very important, but you also need to have a thorough research on the available courses, countries, requirements and prerequisites, qualifications and how the scholarship system works. These days, you can find all the information you need in the internet. One that I recommend is SCHOLARSHIP yahoo group mailing list.
You can also research social and educational organizations that share the same vision as you. What are their programs? What should you do to become a volunteer? Also find out the life stories of generous millionaires. What kind of job or profession they are doing? How can they reach their success? What values do they hold? What charitable activities do they do? Make sure you know exactly what you want in life. Because once you do, we can move to the next phase.
2. Find the right mentors
Now that you know exactly what you want, we have to find out how to get there. Go ask people who have actually received Erasmus Mundus scholarships. Remember, you have to ask the right people! Ask them a complete set of questions: the process you have to go through, the documents you have to prepare, preparations upon arrival, particular skills or qualifications you first have to acquire and the list goes on. Make a detailed check list and write down by when you have to accomplish them, one by one.
When you are in Uni and when you start to work or start any kind of business, do the same thing. Seek out for mentors, people who are willing to guide you. Learn from the best college graduate. Learn from the best employee in the company. Learn from the entrepreneurs who have succeeded in the area of business that you\\\’d like to pursue. The real successful people are humble and they\\\’ll be answer your questions happily.
3. Do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true
Fulfilling your dreams require a lot of patience and persistence. How important is it for you to make your dreams come true?
If you want to get that scholarship, it means from now on you have to maintain your good academic results; be fluent in English and start to learn any new language when necessary; deepen the knowledge of your area of study; practice conversation, listening and writing at least in English; actively participate in organizational activities and many others.
And remember, you don\\\’t have to wait till you get a lot of money to help others. You can, and even are, doing it right now! Doing good deeds can be as simple as giving a smile, saying kind words, praying for others, being a good listener and giving suggestions to friends in need, volunteering your time and energy, and also donating the money you have. It really is not about how much money you give, it is about your intention. When we do good deeds to others, we are establishing good karma with other beings. Whatever we give to others, we are giving it to ourselves.
The most important thing in this journey is to always rise up again and again every time you fall. Remember your goals, they are the motivation to ignite your passion.
4. What you write can become a reality
One of the most crucial things you can do is to write down your goals and dreams in a journal. You can write your dreams for your education, career/ business, home and family, friends and community, love and financial abundance. Write it in present tense and write as specific as you can. So, instead of saying \\\”I want to..\\\” or \\\”I will…\\\”, you can say, \\\”I am doing this..\\\”.
For example: In 2018, I accept Erasmus Mundus scholarship, majoring in child psychology at a University in the UK. I am so very happy to learn from the best tutors and lecturers, together with very supportive classmates, in the country that I really love. I complete my study as the best graduate in my faculty and my parents are very proud of me. Straight afterwards, I get a job at UNICEF and I am working in the aid distribution team for Indonesia. I can help children in the education sector and I receive abundant income. From my savings, I build a counseling house in my home city. Money come to me effortlessly. And I sustain the life of my parents and support my sibling\\\’s education. Etc. Etc.
I am only writing the highlights, but you should expand and write it down as detailed as possible: how do you feel when you are experiencing it? What do you do the first thing in the morning when you wake up in your room in England? What will you do as a counselor? What does this counseling house look like? And so on. Have faith that you are a creator and you can make your dreams come true.
5. Do affirmation every day
Affirmations are practically short sentences that you say to trigger your subconscious mind to accept whatever you say as a reality. Start doing it as a routine, in the morning after you wake up and at night before you go to sleep. Say it to yourself with total faith. Accept what you say as the truth.
For example: I am smart and I am an Erasmus Mundus grantee.
I live in abundance.
All my needs and all my family needs are met by unlimited resources that I have.
I help millions of people all around the world with my works.
I am destined for a life that is beneficial for others.
One more thing that I want to say to you, Febi: You don\\\’t have to suffer in order for others to be happy. You have all the rights to be happy, too! Loving your family does not mean you have to sacrifice yourself and your priorities. As a matter of fact, by being who you truly are and fulfilling your dreams, you can add happiness to your family and support them with your abundance.
