Becoming a spiritual is not a trend

\\\"witnessday\\\"

These days spirituality seems to become a trend in our world. Lots of people would love to be seen, to be heard, and to appear as spiritual. Starting from how people choose their food, their clothing, the pictures they share on facebook or instagram, or even, “jump on the bandwagon” and do yoga, eat chia seeds, meditate and attend self healing workshops.

If I am not talking about you, that’s fine. But if you feel like I’m talking about you here, maybe it’s time for you to rethink and evaluate: what is it that you’re looking for?

What is spirituality, really?

Before we get too deep into the whirl of spiritual fantasy, let’s learn what the meaning of these words really are. All these definitions below are taken from Oxford Dictionaries online.

Spirit: 1. The non-physical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character; the soul; 2. The prevailing or typical quality, mood, or attitude of a person, group, or period of time. Spirituality: The quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. Spiritual: 1. Relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things; Having a relationship based on a profound level of mental or emotional communion; 2. Relating to religion or religious belief.

And I guess it’ll be more comprehensive if we know the definition of the word ‘soul’ here. Soul: 1. The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal; 2. Emotional or intellectual energy or intensity, especially as revealed in a work of art or an artistic performance; 3. The essence or embodiment of a specified quality.

After reading all the explanation above, I, myself like to define spiritual as anything related to the intensity of energy of our soul (spiritual, immaterial, emotional, intellectual, etc.). Or, to make it short and more straightforward, everything taking place in our lives is spiritual in essence.

The encounter with the spiritual world

It is said that we’re not humans who have spiritual experience, but we’re spiritual beings who are having human experience. This means, that in essence, or in reality, we understand “this game on Earth” and we are always connected to God and the Universe. We just forgot that we all are spiritual all along.

Each and everyone of us has his and her unique way of how we encounter spirituality, spiritual experience, or perhaps, a spiritual teacher. According to my guru, Gede Prama, these days people are guided into spirituality through their suffering. When our soul’s broken because of sadness and pain, we question the world around us and we start seeking; our logical mind becomes numb – and at the same time, our awareness arise.

My own encounter with spirituality is led by my curiosity; I’ve always had deep interest in life and in humanity. But my deeper encounter with spirituality, then, is also unfold by the many many pages of deep suffering.

We are purified through our suffering. We shine more brightly because we have radiated light into the darkness within. Compassionately embrace and pour light towards our sadness, pain, anger, resentment, jealousy, disappointment, worry, anxiety, weariness and despair. This is spirituality that I know of.

After our soul shines even more brightly, there comes a longing and calling to share that feeling of love. That is why, for me, those who are spiritual are those who have the biggest smile, who become the number one when they are asked to share, who give without asking anything in return, who are always willing to listen, to warm up a heart and to serve.

The highest spiritual achievement

I know there are people out there who love to boast themselves and show off their mystical ability. But when they are face to face with people who say bad things about them, their  masks fall off and their fangs appear. The more I grow, the less I am in awe with those kinds of people. I choose to bow in respect and learn from those who somewhat appear to be foolish – because of their patience, their tenderness and their love.

Spirituality and becoming spiritual is not a trend. Becoming spiritual is returning back to our true self. And our true self as well as the greatest spiritual achievement that we all have is our ability to love.

Sometimes people consider spiritual achievement as the ability to see energy from other realms or dimensions. Astral traveling during meditation. Ability to see the past and foresee the future. Ablility to heal. Ability to place your hand upon someone and then a miracle appears. Ability to read other people’s mind. Ability to communicate with plants, animals, and aliens. Abducted by the UFO. Have your chakras opened up till the highest level. Ability to know when you’re going to die. And many other things.

And, if you can fly, then so what?

We’re all born with the greatest spiritual ability there is. Which is the ability to love. It is our true self. Our true nature. Free. Unconditional. It’s all there is, and it is enough.

Comparing ourselves to have “spiritual ability which seems cool” is not cool. And it is not cool for those who feel that they have “spiritual ability which seems cool” if that ability becomes just mere ability. The best of people are those who are kind and compassionate towards others, the wise men say. It is not important to be able to fly.

For me, the ability to forgive those who insult us, the ability to forgive the partner who betray us, the ability to forgive co-worker who capture our money… those are spiritual ability which are super cool!

Actually, it is okay if we first encounter spirituality because we follow the “trend” – there’s nothing wrong with that. I’d only like us to rethink and refeel our choices of actions. I just hope that we’re always reminded that one of the biggest egos in our lives is the ego of spirituality. Becoming a spiritual is not a trend. We’re already spiritual by nature. What we need is to learn to become a more patient and more loving humans. This is spirituality that I know of.

Okay, now it is time for me to hear from you. What’s the story behind your first encounter with spirituality? I’d like to hear directly from you, so if you have an interesting spiritual experience that’s unique just for you, you can share your story in the comment column below.

Thank you so much for reading. If you find this article helpful, please help me share it with your friends. I pray so that day by day, we can shine more and more light upon the darkness within – to then little by little become the light who can share love towards the world, inside and out. See you soon!
