3 simple steps to increase your happiness level according to Mingyur Rinpoche

witnessday

Conversing with the happiest person on Earth, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, I cannot help not to ask him about happiness – in an of course more profound way 😉

Mingyur Rinpoche’s answer in this second interview video has amazingly helped me in my own self cultivation, especially on how we can rise back up again even after we have failed for so many times holding on to our good habits.

If you’re a hard headed person like me, if you have gone through black and blue just to develop your good habits, if you feel guilty and are disappointed with yourself for falling down for so many times back to your bad habits, this video is for you. Mingyur Rinpoche said,

“Failing means you have tried. The more you fail, the better. It’s okay. After you fail, rise up and let’s try again. Failure is the mother of success.”

Below is the quoted summary of my interview with Mingyur Rinpoche.

Q: People talk about happiness a lot. It is quite normal to talk about happiness when you’re living in a normal life. But how about those who live in not so normal life? People who live in the war zones, those who are sick, in jail, the refugees. They don’t even experience happiness. So what about them?

A: Accept that we cannot help everybody. It depends on the cause and condition of each person.

There are two type of suffering in life: the natural suffering and the self-created suffering. The natural suffering is something that we cannot avoid and change, for example getting old and die. But how you react to you getting old and die, that’s something you can change. If there’s someone pointing a gun on your head, your physical body is in his hand but your mind is on your own hand. You have two choices: you can die painfully or you can die peacefully. I’m not saying that it’s easy, but it can be done.

“So, suffering and happiness, those happen at our mental state. If you want happiness by changing everything as you wish, that’s impossible. But if you change yourself from the inside, you can find real lasting happiness.”

Q: So what can we do to be released from this mental suffering?

A: There are three steps to release yourself from this suffering and increase your happiness level. First, ACCEPT. Accept the nature of reality, that life is just like the stock market. Recognize the potential of this reality. This acceptance happens at the cognitive level, in your head.

Second is EXPERIENCE. This can be done through meditation. In this stage, your head and your heart go together.

The third is HABIT. It is very difficult to develop habits. To start, you don’t have to meditate for an hour a day. Simply meditate for five minutes a day, but try to do it everyday for 20 to 30 days.

For example, you’re someone who has a high ego. First, look at your ego. Accept that you are an egoistic person. Second, practice meditation. Bring love and compassion to your daily practice. Third, change slowly and slowly day by day. As a person who has a high ego, you cannot change easily. Accept this reality. But, you can try and try again. Fail, and then try again. Fail, and then try again. If you want to change yourself in a day, you’ll feel disappointed and you’ll feel like you’ll be a bad person forever. Accept your mistakes and don’t give up.
